ChatGPT Losing AI Market Share to Gemini and Claude

Comscore and Sensor Tower reports from 2026 show ChatGPT's share of the AI assistant market shrinking fast: Comscore puts it at 50% in June, while Sensor Tower recorded 46.4% in May. Gemini and Claude are closing the gap.

ChatGPT is still the most popular AI assistant in the world, but its dominance is weakening. Two new reports, from Comscore and Sensor Tower, show its share shrinking fast. According to Sensor Tower, it fell below 50% for the first time since ChatGPT launched in late 2022. Google Gemini and Anthropic Claude are closing the gap.

1. What happened

According to the Comscore Q2 2026 AI Intelligence Report released on 22 September 2026, ChatGPT's share of total AI prompt volume fell from 70% in January 2026 to 50% in June 2026. Over the same period, Gemini rose from 17% to 30%, and Claude surged from 2% to 11%.

A separate report from Sensor Tower, the State of AI Report 2026, confirms the same trend on a global scale. ChatGPT's share dropped from over 50% in January to 46.4% by the end of May. Gemini held 27.7% and Claude 10.3% as of May 2026.

This is the first time ChatGPT's share has fallen below half the market since it created the modern AI chatbot category in late 2022.

2. Why Gemini and Claude are gaining

Gemini got a big boost from its integration into the Google ecosystem. The app is installed on millions of Android phones through Google Workspace, Gmail, and Google Search. Google also invested in AI Overviews, which now appear in 39.4% of desktop searches as of June 2026, up from 25.8% in July 2025.

Claude built a strong reputation for productivity tasks like coding, document analysis, and text editing. Sensor Tower reported that 13% of Anthropic users pay for a subscription, the highest conversion rate in the industry. Claude's desktop conversations increased 20-fold from October 2025 to June 2026.

ChatGPT still leads in absolute users. It reached 168 million desktop conversations in June 2026 and crossed one billion monthly active users. But the overall market is growing faster than ChatGPT, so its share shrinks even as its user count rises.

3. The key numbers

  • ChatGPT: 50% share (June 2026), down from 70% (January 2026). 168 million desktop conversations.
  • Gemini: 30% share, up from 17%. 89 million desktop conversations, up from 8 million a year ago.
  • Claude: 11% share, up from 2%. 22.3 million desktop conversations in June 2026, up 20-fold from October 2025.
  • Sensor Tower (global): ChatGPT 46.4%, Gemini 27.7%, Claude 10.3% (May 2026).
  • ChatGPT remains the most used AI chatbot in the United States.

4. Other factors at play

A few specific events accelerated the shift. OpenAI's deal with the US Department of Defense in February 2026 triggered a spike in ChatGPT uninstalls, showing that brand trust and user values matter alongside product quality.

Mobile now drives growth faster than desktop. AI use on phones rose 12% since the start of 2025, while desktop rose 25%. Women remain the largest AI users on mobile, with index scores of 110 for ChatGPT, 119 for Copilot, and 115 for Gemini.

AI is also emerging as a brand discovery and monetization channel. Fashion brand mentions in AI responses grew 123% between January and March 2026, while health and beauty brand mentions rose 150%. Sponsored ads started appearing in AI travel search results, from 6% in March to 24% by May.

5. What it means for everyday users

This competition is good for users. When three or more AI assistants compete closely, each company has to lower prices, raise quality, and add features faster. Users can now try several tools for free before choosing the one that fits how they work.

Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Meta AI each hold less than 5% share, so the real contest is now focused on three main players. Check our AI Tools list to compare the core features of each assistant.

What it means for you

The AI race is now a three-way contest, not a one-player monopoly. Here are the practical steps you can take:

  1. Try two or three tools. Do not rely on ChatGPT alone. Gemini is free for most functions and Claude is strong for writing and code tasks.
  2. Pick by task. Gemini is great for search and Google integration. Claude excels at code and long documents. ChatGPT is still best for general conversation and creativity.
  3. Do not pay too early. Claude's 13% conversion rate shows many users are happy with the free version. Try the free tier of each tool before subscribing.
  4. Watch for ads in AI. ChatGPT began testing ads in February 2026. By May, 17% of daily users were served ads. Know that AI responses may be influenced by advertisers.
  5. Update your search habits. 39.4% of Google desktop searches now include an AI Overview. Make sure your content or business appears in AI responses, not just traditional search.
