Shopify will now pay commissions to AI shopping agents

Shopify has formalized Promoted Placements, a program that pays AI agent developers a commission on promoted products, starting at a 0.3% base rate.

The AI agent that shops for you now has a cash incentive behind it. Shopify updated its developer documentation on October 27, 2026 to formalize Promoted Placements, a program where Shopify pays a commission to the company that built the AI agent whenever a shopper buys a promoted product. The program is still in Developer Preview, with access managed through an invite-only waitlist.

1. What changed

Shopify's Global Catalog can be searched by AI agents like ChatGPT through the Catalog API. With Promoted Placements, Shopify blends commissioned products into those search results. Each promoted product variant comes with a placement object showing the commission rate.

The base rate is 0.3% of the value of attributed purchases. The attribution window is 7 days, using a last non-direct click methodology. Commissions are paid monthly through Hyperwallet to the developer's Shopify Partner account.

2. Stores can pay more

Rates can go above 0.3% when a merchant runs Shop Campaigns with external platforms turned on. Shopify converts that campaign setting into a commission and adds it to the base rate. The example in Shopify's documentation shows a total of 1.5% on one variant.

But the conditions are tight. The extra commission applies only to products in an active campaign in the United States, priced in USD, and only when the buyer completes the purchase in Shop, either the Shop mobile app or on shop.com. A purchase on the store's own website earns only the base rate.

3. Why this matters for merchants

The mechanism gives an AI agent two new incentives: pick the product that pays its developer more, and route the shopper to Shop instead of the store's website. Shopify's documentation does not say whether a higher commission also moves a product up the list.

For Malaysian merchants, the program is still narrow: active campaigns must be in the US and in USD. But the direction is clear. AI agents are no longer just an organic channel, they increasingly resemble a paid advertising channel. If you sell on Shopify and depend on agent traffic, your exposure there may eventually become paid placement.

4. Disclosure to buyers

Shopify requires developers in the program to label promoted products and tell users they may earn a commission, clearly before buyers act on a promoted result. The disclosure obligation references US FTC material-connection rules and sponsored-content rules in the EU and UK. Shopify does not prescribe exact wording, it leaves that to developers and their own counsel.

5. Where things actually stand

All of this is still a Developer Preview. Access is invite-only through a waitlist in the Dev Dashboard. Shopify states that field names, data shapes and behavior are "not final and might change". Industry observers such as Search Engine Journal have also raised whether commissions change result ordering, since Shopify does not say.

What it means for you

Ordinary shoppers may not notice anything yet, because no major public developer has activated the program. But if you run a business or build tools, this is an early and clear signal.

  1. Agent developers: if your product searches the Shopify catalog, the Promoted Placements waitlist is now open, and commissions start at 0.3%.
  2. Shopify merchants: check whether your Shop Campaigns include the Catalog API as a platform, because that converts your campaign into a commission for outside agents.
  3. Malaysian merchants: no action needed now, but watch for Shopify expanding the program beyond the US and USD.
  4. Shoppers: do not be surprised if AI agents start labeling "promoted" results and stating they may earn a commission, that is a program requirement.
  5. Everyone: treat commissions as a sign that agent result lists may carry commercial elements, not just the best match.
