The new Mazda CX-5 now talks like a human, thanks to Google Gemini

Mazda has started rolling out Google Gemini to the new CX-5 through an over-the-air update, replacing Google Assistant for owners who opt in.

Mazda announced on October 27, 2026 that the all-new CX-5 equipped with "Google built-in" now supports Google Gemini, an AI assistant you can talk to like a normal conversation. The update is free through Google Play and covers US, Canadian, European and Japanese specifications.

This matters because conversational AI in cars is no longer a luxury feature. The CX-5 is Mazda's best-selling family SUV, with five million sold since 2011. When a volume car like this gets a conversational assistant, it signals where the whole market is heading.

1. What changes inside the car

Gemini arrives through an over-the-air update, so no dealer visit is required. After installation, drivers need to sign into a Google account and opt in manually. Gemini then replaces Google Assistant as the active voice assistant.

The key difference is how you speak. There are no fixed commands to memorise. You can ask for a highly rated café with outdoor seating along your route, then narrow the options down with follow-up questions.

2. Controlling the car with plain sentences

Gemini can operate selected vehicle functions. Mazda's example: say "it's cold inside and the windows are fogged up", and the system adjusts the climate control on its own.

You can also get destination details, real-time traffic information and estimated arrival times purely by speaking. Mazda stresses the point that drivers never need to take their eyes or attention off the road.

3. Music and messages by voice too

For entertainment, Gemini can play music to match your mood rather than a specific song title, through Spotify, YouTube Music and Amazon Music. It can also answer questions about the song currently playing or resume an audiobook where you left off.

For messaging, Gemini can summarise, read out, draft, refine or translate your replies by voice, including WhatsApp messages. There is also Gemini Live in beta, for free-flowing conversations while planning a trip or practising work discussions.

4. Languages, costs and conditions

The update supports 12 European language variants: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Slovenian, Swedish and Turkish. Full functionality requires a data connection, although selected features work offline.

On cost, data services for Gemini, Google Maps and Google Play are free for three years from the vehicle's first registration, for owners who sign up to Mazda Connected Services through the MyMazda app. After that, owners can connect through a smartphone with its own data plan. CX-5 prices are unchanged with the addition.

5. Mazda is not first, but the signal is what counts

Mazda joins brands like Volvo, Ford and Renault that already offer Gemini. For Mazda itself, the CX-5 is currently the only model with a Google-based infotainment system, enabled by its E/E Architecture+ electrical design.

What stands out is that a headline feature was added after the cars were already delivered. That delivers on Mazda's launch pledge that its digital cockpit would keep evolving after sale.

What it means for you

If you own a new CX-5 with Google built-in in Europe, the update is already waiting for you to activate. For car buyers in Malaysia and across Asia, it hints at what to expect from the next wave of models.

  1. Check your MyMazda app. CX-5 owners with Google built-in need to sign into a Google account and opt in before Gemini activates.
  2. Read the data terms. Free data runs three years from first registration; after that you need a smartphone data plan.
  3. Voice really is safer. Conversational control means less time glancing at a large touchscreen while driving.
  4. Expect this to spread. When Mazda's best-selling family SUV gets a conversational AI, rival brands will follow in their 2027 and 2028 models.
