The investment runs from 2027 to 2028 and adds to the US$2 billion announced in May 2024. Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google, made the announcement in person.

1. What will be built

The plan covers new data centre campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. Google's first campus at Elmina Business Park in Selangor is now fully operational. Computing capacity in Selangor will also support a new Google Cloud region in Malaysia for enterprise customers.

According to Google's official blog, this infrastructure will run services like Search, Maps and Chrome for millions of users, while letting local companies build their own AI applications. Google currently works with organisations including AirAsia, Hong Leong Bank and Maxis on cloud and AI adoption.

Groundbreaking ceremony for Malaysia's first Google data centre and Cloud region at Elmina Business Park, Selangor. How much economic benefit is expected

Google's own figures separate two phases clearly. During the 2027 to 2028 construction phase, the new campuses are expected to contribute an average of US$1.1 billion per year to Malaysia's GDP and support more than 37,000 local jobs per year, generating US$378 million in average annual labour income.

Once operational, the facilities are projected to sustain more than 9,000 local jobs per year, far fewer than the construction phase, but with wages averaging 45 percent above the national median. Roles mentioned include data centre technicians, mechanical and electrical engineers, and logistics operations managers.

3. Skills for 800,000 Malaysians

Google aims to upskill around 800,000 Malaysians by 2031 through four programmes. Experience AI Malaysia, developed with the Ministry of Education and the Raspberry Pi Foundation, trains educators to teach AI literacy to students aged 11 to 14. Jelajah AI MSME helps microentrepreneurs set up digital storefronts, starting with a pilot cohort in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.

The AKAD Rakyat programme with Arus Academy trains local government officers across 19 councils in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. Google will also establish Data Center Institutes at selected polytechnics, with a 10-week curriculum for data centre technical roles.

4. Power and water, the unavoidable questions

Google pledged to add more than 1 gigawatt (GW) of clean energy capacity to Malaysia's National Grid. According to Bloomberg, the company also committed US$160 million to shared water infrastructure in Negeri Sembilan, to support its data centre operations while serving local communities.

This is not a small issue. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Johari Abdul Ghani said data centre and cloud computing projects account for RM95.8 billion, nearly 44 percent, of the RM218.5 billion in investments approved in the first half of this year. Malaysia has approved 117 data centres with a combined maximum energy demand of about 23,500MW upon completion. He stressed that Malaysia must become a creator of digital value, not just a host for tech giants.

5. Local suppliers get the orders too

Google works with more than 80 Malaysian entities across construction and civil engineering, network infrastructure, power and cooling components, and services like logistics and waste management. Projects approved under the Data Centre Task Force must meet at least 30 percent domestic content requirements, including Malaysian consultants, contractors and engineers.

What it means for you

This announcement is not just a big number on paper.
