Claude Ultra drops the 5-hour limit, Max 20x becomes Ultra

Anthropic renamed its Claude plans on October 30, 2026 and removed the 5-hour usage cap for verified Ultra accounts.

On October 30, 2026, Anthropic renamed its two most expensive Claude plans. The $100 per month Max 5x plan is now called simply Max, and the $200 per month Max 20x plan is now called Ultra. Prices did not change.

The real change is not the name. Anthropic also removed the 5-hour usage limit for verified Ultra accounts, a cap that heavy users running long tasks had complained about for months.

1. What the new lineup looks like

The Claude consumer lineup now reads: Free, Pro at $20 per month, Max at $100 per month, and Ultra at $200 per month. Existing subscribers move to the new names automatically and need to do nothing.

The old "5x" and "20x" labels actually referred to the 5-hour allowance. The 20x plan offered a 5-hour allowance 20 times the Pro level, while its weekly limit was only 10 times Pro. Two different numbers on one label caused confusion, so Anthropic dropped the naming scheme entirely.

2. The 5-hour limit: what was actually removed

Until now, every paid Claude consumer plan had two limits: a rolling allowance that reset every 5 hours, and a separate weekly cap. Heavy users, especially developers running long Claude Code sessions, often had to stop mid-task when the 5-hour allowance ran out.

For verified Ultra accounts, that session limit is gone. You can work all day without being forced to stop, as long as your weekly allowance lasts. Anthropic says weekly limits are unchanged.

3. How to tell if your account is verified

There is no form to fill in. Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically using account and payment history, as a fraud-prevention measure against resold or shared seats.

New accounts keep a temporary limit until verification completes. Subscribers receive an email when the limit is lifted. Anthropic also clarifies that verifying your phone number at checkout is a separate step and does not remove this limit.

The quickest check: open Settings, then Usage. If there is no "Current session" bar, your account is verified.

4. The weekly cap remains the real boundary

The 5-hour limit disappeared, but total capacity did not grow. Ultra still offers 10 times the weekly usage of Pro, and Fable, Anthropic's top model, has its own separate weekly limit.

Treat this change as reshaped access, not extra quota. If you burn through the weekly allowance in two long workdays, you still wait for the weekly reset. Ultra also raises monthly API credits to $200, up from $100 on Max.

5. The premium plan race heats up

The move landed one day after OpenAI doubled ChatGPT Pro usage limits, having backed down from a planned reduction. Both companies are competing hard for the heavy users who pay $100 to $200 a month, and usage caps have become the main point of comparison between their premium tiers.

For customers, the competition is good news. Caps that used to draw complaints are being removed one by one, and plan names are getting simpler.

What it means for you

If you are a heavy Claude user, this change removes a major obstacle for long work. Take three practical steps:

  1. Check your account status. Open Settings, then Usage. No "Current session" bar means your 5-hour limit is already gone.
  2. Plan around the weekly cap. Long sessions are now possible, but the 10-times-Pro weekly quota is still the real boundary.
  3. Compare with Pro first. At $20 a month, Pro already includes Opus 5.5 at no extra cost. Move to Ultra only if you regularly hit the weekly Pro and Max limits.
  4. Use your API credits. Max and Ultra now include monthly API credits worth $100 and $200, so put them toward your own automations.
