It is the biggest crash in Google's history. What happened, and what does it mean for ordinary users?

1. A one-day stock fall

Alphabet released its third-quarter results on October 28, 2026. The overall numbers were actually good: revenue grew 25 percent to $127.6 billion. But search advertising came in at $82 billion, below the expected $83.4 billion.

Shares fell more than 12 percent on Thursday, according to the BBC. Bloomberg, as reported by the News Tribune, recorded a 13 percent fall to $281.37 that erased $511 billion in market value. Chosun Biz reported the close at $283.82, down 12.6 percent. The numbers differ because each outlet measured at a different moment in the trading day.

Market value fell from $3.97 trillion to $3.46 trillion in one day, the BBC reported. Chosun Biz called it the second-largest single-day drop in US stock market history, after Nvidia's $593 billion loss last year.

2. AI Mode eating its own revenue

The core problem comes from inside. Alphabet's chief business officer, Philipp Schindler, said AI Mode, the search tab that answers questions conversationally, has "lower monetization" than regular search.

Users who get an answer straight from the AI rarely click ads or visit other websites. Chosun Biz reported that Google's paid click growth slowed from 13 percent in Q2 to 8 percent in Q3. Year-on-year search ad growth also slowed: 19 percent in Q1, 17 percent in Q2, 12 percent in Q3.

The irony: search volume itself did not fall. CEO Sundar Pichai said search query growth hit a five-year high. The question is how Google turns those queries into money.

3. Cash flow turns negative

The second issue is the sheer size of AI spending. For the second quarter in a row, Alphabet posted negative free cash flow, something it had never done since going public. Q3 free cash flow was negative $9.1 billion, according to The Independent and Chosun Biz.

Capital expenditure this year is expected to reach $195 billion to $205 billion. Future commitments for computing power and energy have reached $924 billion, with total future obligations above $1 trillion, according to Bloomberg's report.

4. Google Cloud is the one bright spot

Google Cloud grew fastest of all. Its revenue more than doubled to $30.7 billion, beating estimates of $29.1 billion. Its backlog of contracts not yet converted to revenue has reached $561 billion.

Interestingly, some of Cloud's biggest customers are Google's own rivals, such as Anthropic. Analyst Thomas Monteiro of Investing.com put it plainly: right now Alphabet makes more money selling AI to its competitors than using it itself.

5. What about Microsoft and Amazon

Microsoft, which reported the same day, held up well. Its shares rose more than 5 percent because its free cash flow is still positive, according to The Independent. Amazon fell 6 percent after hours after posting negative cash flow of $42 billion, six times worse than three months earlier.

The pattern is clear: investors no longer give AI spending a free pass. Every company now has to show that the money produces returns.

What it means for you

This is stock market news, but the effects reach ordinary users too:

Google Search will get more ads. Google announced ads will roll out in AI Mode to international markets. Expect ads inside AI answers soon.

Free AI tools may start charging. When ad monetization weakens, subscriptions become the key revenue source.

This move tracks the whole industry. If Google, the richest player in this space, feels pressure, smaller companies will feel it more.

For digital sellers, search traffic keeps thinning. AI answers reduce clicks to websites. Diversify your channels instead of relying on search alone.

Sources

Google value plunges by $500bn as its own AI search hits ad sales (BBC)

Google stock price crashes and wipes $500 billion off company amid panic over AI (The Independent)

Google erases record $500 billion as AI eats into sales (Bloomberg via News Tribune)

Alphabet's Stock Plunge Erases $500 Billion as AI Search Concerns Mount (Chosun Biz)

",1793599408286]
